PENFOLDS BIN 389 2005
The Grade: AMAZING. The Mojo: The Penfolds Bin 389 Cabernet Shiraz 2005 is referred to as the “Poor Man’s Grange.” Derived from much of the same vineyard sources as its big brother, this amazing blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz (52% and 48% respectively) is a very impressive effort considering its price tag. Aromas of dark berry fruits, soy, malt, dates, bay leaf, rosemary, oak and sage slowly emerge from the glass as it aerates. The palate is awash with Darjeeling tea, olive tapenade, blackberry compote, cassis, camphor, tar, chocolate, espresso, cinnamon, mocha, coffee, and so much more. Layer after layer of complexity is revealed, with so much left to the imagination even after it’s finished. For coming in under $30, this is a helluva lot of wine for the price. And extremely ageworthy too.
